Steering column bearing/clock spring

OK, here's my next project: upper steering bearing collar.
I managed to get everything pulled apart, but when I got the steering wheel off, the top of the clock spring came with it,and it unraveled like a party favor. I managed to wind it all back together, and the wires didn't break. I taped it together and continued.
I got to the bearing and collars, but I couldn't get the serrated retaining ring off. By this time it was too dark to continue (I have the worst setup for working).
I got everything back together and nervously took it for a test drive, and it seemed fine, but I didn't get up to highway speed.
Questions: what is a good tool to remove the retaining ring, which I'd like to reuse?
My horn works, and I'm not particularly concerned about the airbag, so do I need a new clock spring?
Should I be worried about driving on the highway tomorrow?
