after doing a deeper search on the board, the way to remove the duct is to "bear wrestle it"... I believe others referred to accessing the front screw as "wicked bad", "like pancreatic surgery" etc... yeah. not easy anyway! the way I got the duct out was (after removing the 2 obvious screws) to pull up hard on the 2 sides of the Y (right at the seats). Basically pull on it like you're going to break it - it doesn't break - the rearseat diffuser connections will pop off. then by pulling up on the Y end the connection under the dash can be pushed down enough to slip off + twist out of the way. unsnap the metal clip on the wire race + it will slide a little. there was already a hole there to access the screw for the heatshield + it took a T-30 and a bunch of patience to unscrew.
getting the heatshield up was pretty easy - needed to brace part of it up with a block of wood to get 1 screw in, but the others went in easily... what a job! no wonder our indy screwed the new one to the old one the first time this was replaced!
