I recently completed an engine swap on a 1980 5 door automatic. I was given the car as a means to save it from the crusher, and since I had a spare engine from an 8V 1986 (with CIS), I decided to drive my parts inventory around.

At any rate the car will not start after the swap. I considered changing out the entire wiring harness, but ultimately decided to stay with the original. I replaced the hall distributor with one approprate to the 1980 ignition control module. I also had to replace the fuel pump after having no success with the original while emloying the "jump the fuel pump" test.

The car still does not start. I have pulled the injectors and verified fuel. I have also verified spark. I have been able to get the car running, briefly, by manually holding up the air flow sensor plate. If I released the plate, the car immediately stalled. I also was able to briefly get the car running without any manual intervention. The car ran pretty poorly, I suppose because the timing was off as a result of the distributor switch, and I did not really have much throttle control. It ran for about 30 seconds and I shut it off to prepare for some tuning. Since then, the car has not started. At the beginning of a crank, it sounds like it wants to fire, but absolutely nothing after that.

Since I know the car runs, however poorly, I am confused about why it will not start. What actuates that air flow sensor plate? I think it is just air movement, so is there something else that blocks fuel to the injectors.

I was most pleased that the car ran after 4 weekends of messing with it, but now I am just frustrated. Any advice anyone can offer will be greatly appreciated.
