John, yes, do stick the blade of a screwdriver or small chisel in the gap to open it slightly.
Follow the photos at the link. The photo below shows the upper column at it's extended position. The next photo in sequence shows the upper column retracted. This is what gives you the clearance to remove the lower column after removing the pinch bolts and opening the gap slightly.
