I wouldn't worry too much about it...

...money spent on a really nice "plain" T16 is far better than money spent on a less well-loved SPG. Also, SPGs tend to live harder lives as, being the "performance-oriented model", are generally driven harder...

-The wheels and body kit really do look sweet.
-The suspension wasn't lowered until '87, until then it was regular T16 height. But as the newest "SPG springs" are near 20 years old now, I'd rather slap on a new set of Intrax or something...
-Anti roll bars came standard on the SPG since its inception in '85. All T16s got them in '87.
-The APC box which controls the boost pressure thereby controlling the power came was the same as a standard for '85 and '86. While regular T16s soldiered on with 160hp for the rest of the run, SPGs got 165hp for '87, then 175hp for '90 when they introduced the new Mitsubishi turbocharger in SPG models only. The next year, all T16s got the Mitsu.
The regular 160hp APC box has a part number ending in 599. The 165hp SPG box has a part number ending in 127. I'm not sure what the 175hp box's HP is.
-The "red box" Engine Tuning Kits were available as options on all T16s from '87/on. There are two different kits--one which is just a red box good for 175hp, the other is a different red box, 2.8bar FPR, and distributor with part code ending in 010, but the only difference on the distributor is the vacuum advance capsule--this kit was good for 185hp.

The '91/up cars add a few extra touches of refinement. '89/'90 are my favourite as they have the most robust transmission. The ECU troubles epidemic to these first years of LH2.4 are easily solved by throwing in an ECU from a '91/up. The LH2.4 cars are quite a bit more refined to drive than LH2.2 cars. '90 is the first year for ABS. Some like it, some hate it. Brake pedal feel is heavily diminished in the ABS cars. Some claim it's prone to expensive failures.

I'd advise steering clear of an '85 unless it's extremely nice, as the wiring is all quite different (much more in common with an '84 8VT) and is also biodegradable, causing potential electrical disasters especially in the engine wiring loom. Further, the APC box (while a 160hp box) is under the back seat with a different connector than the '86/up cars, and while this can be rewired and relocated quite easily, it's something to think about... I did this to fit the 185hp engine tuning kit to my '85.

Anyway in summary, pick the best T16 900 you can find, and then go about making it look/perform how you like.

Good luck!
