1988 900S, 16V non-turbo, 5 speed, 179K miles, purchased Sept. 2008 at 168K.
I use Castrol GTX 10W-30 in mine. This is my 2nd 900S and 4th Saab. I also used Castrol GTX in my 1975 Saab 99LE back in the early 80's with good results. I use Castrol GTX most of the time in our vehicles. I use different filters depending on what is available at the time I buy everything for our oil changes. I like FRAM TG filters since they are easy to grip, and screw on and off on the 900's. I'm a big believer in 3000 mile change intervals. I've been doing my 88' 900S on 2000 mile intervals which amounts to twice per year, maybe 3X, in my attempts to gently clean up the engine. 4 qts of oil and a filter is pretty cheap maintenance for a high mileage 22 year old engine that I've managed to tweak and get running like a top with the input and help from the very knowledgable people on this website.
My lifters can be a bit noisy on cold mornings so I occasionally use Marvel Mystery Oil(MMO) which seems to help quiet them down. Good luck with your 900S and I hope you enjoy it!!!
