Auto Tranny: gasket opinions?

I have a 1989 that won't shift from 2-3 until 45mph (classic problem) and I'm finally working on solving that. I've done 2 drain/refills + will do another in the next day or so (once it warms up a little outside!), but to be honest, I've seen no improvement, and the most recent drain looked almost as grungy as the first... I've been avoiding dropping the pans/filter/governor, etc but looks like I'd better get on that... it's the winter beater + winter's almost here!
Questions:
I've already got gaskets from eeuro: Elwis Royal front, Elring back. I've read comments when I search that some of the cheap paper types are prone to leaking. The Elwis looks thinner + more papery than Elring. I assumed Elring was OEM, no? Anyway, are any of you using these gaskets from eeuro + all ok, or any problems?
wrt cleaning it out, iirc, CMyles has commented to clean out the cooler line well or everything will soon be a mess again. Any special process to do that? Would 3 "drain/refill/drive"s before dropping the pan usually be good enough to do that?
any preferred solvents to use for cleaning stuff, eg the governor? I know this is a task that requires great care to avoid contamination of internal parts with dirt + inappropriate substances...
I had thought this car had had the atf changed before we got it (1 year 5000k ago), but looks like it may have never been changed (properly)... only 100k miles on the car!
