I think emission testing is a scam - high NOX Posted by DougM [Email] (#211) [Profile/Gallery] (more from DougM) on Mon, 22 Nov 2010 14:58:07 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
1988 900T convertible.
This is my fourth emission test with this car, which has to be done every two years.
The first test had to be done when I purchased the car, which was around 2005, then was tested again for plates in 2006. I don't recall what the numbers were, but it passed all categories those times.
The 2008 test failed because of high NOX - 1600ppm with an allowable of 1268ppm. I drove home and read a few posts on this BB, and the only thing I did was move the timing a few degrees, but I don't recall which way I moved it - advanced or retarded. Three days later it passed with a reading of 860ppm NOX.
That failure has always bugged me, and I've been putting off the testing this year because I always have a fear it will fail again. So procrastinating me waits until a few days before my birthday to take it in. I stopped in after work, and they refused to dyno it because they noticed a sizeable puddle of coolant underneath. The darn overflow tank appeared to have a cracked neck, so I drove home and swapped it with a used one, then drove back to await more failure. They only did a "quick" test this year(but I remember them running it longer the other times it was tested), and it passed with flying colors - 206ppm NOX. I will admit this car has been neglected the past few years, and it's only been getting oil changes and tanks of gas, but I never would have imagined the emissions are actually getting better the older it gets.....next time should be no test since it might qualify for the 25 year exemption.
