If there is enough thread exposure, get two nuts and jam nut them together. Then put the filter into a vise, and rotate the threaded part off.
Or, you could take it back to the gravel monkeys that overtightened it and ask them to remove it without damaging the threads. But I wouldn't be inclined to do that as they are probably the type that could screw up a crowbar in a sandbox.
