Yeah, it's positively brutal.
Possible advice: Find a later car and swap it's entire wiring section through. You can remove the "shields" from the connectors at both ends, feed it through the holes in the body, and replace complete. All cars since '85 have essentially the same wiring in the door, so you could look for a later car without insulation issues and just swap that in on both sides. That's what I'm doing on my '80, since the donor doors are from a crusty '85. :)
