I have a '90 SAAB Turbo 900. After reading the info about what A/R represents, the rest of the numbers on my turbo housing are starting to make better sense to me. I often wondered if my turbo was rebuilt years ago, with someone sending it in, and they kept the core and replaced my cartridge housing (air compressor) with a Diesel model from a BMW? Here is what mine shows. BTW...Mine was passing oil so I removed it, and now am trying to figure out what kit to order...
my dataplate reads:
TBO324 >Turbo model application (ref points to 83-87 BMW oil cool Turb Diesel)
465163-002 >bearing housing(ref matches 1989 SAAB 900) [2.0L 14 B202F 16 valve]. Not for sure if the commmon slang when referring to this turbo as a "T3" is accurate, because there are 5 major component families to a turbo system. 1-turbine wheels, 2-compressor wheels,3-bearing housing,4-backplate/seal plate,5-heatshields. From my interpretation (correct if wrong please) The family of "TB03" is most accurate to use vice "T3". The reason I mention this is because according the the international catalog, you will find parts for both TB03 and T3. What confuses me is what my dataplate says. The Garrett Intl catalog says I should have a TBO382 for SAAB apps(2.0L 14 B202F 16 valve), yet my dataplate clearly says TBO324 (2.4L 16 MD21 16). TBO382 is water-cooled for gasoline and the TBO324 is oil cooled for diesel fuel. Should I assume these turbo housings are interchangeable and that someone probably had this rebuilt and recased with a spare BMW turbo case?
