spo,
I can't direct you to anyone for transmission rebuilding in your neck of the woods but I can give you this advice. The pinion bearings can not be replaced without complete disassembly of the transmission so if your pinion bearings are going out you'll need to have the unit rebuilt or replaced with another one. The less load you apply to those whining bearings the less damage done over time so babying the car in low gears is a good idea if you must drive it. As those bearings wear out they produce progressively more and more radial and axial free motion of the pinion shaft and damage spreads and progresses through the gearbox until it's destroyed. Dealing with the pinion bearings when the noise first begins to be audible will usually ensure the least number of replacement parts are required and the best quality of rebuilt unit will result. When I rebuild units that are at the stage where yours is I can often just replace the pinion bearings and a few other small parts, gaskets, seals and o'rings and produce a virtually "like new" unit. Be sure that noise you are hearing is coming from the transmission before you go and pull it out for rebuilding. You have kind of low mileage for pinion noise (just as a general, but not hard and fast, rule). Maybe it's belts, alternator bearings or something like that.
