The only issue you'll have with the "top" starter vs. the "bottom" starter is the battery cables and grounds. Typically, on the "top" starter motor, the positive cable goes from the battery to the starter (and also branches from the battery on later models that have the power junction on the inner fender), and then straight on to the alternator with a much shorter cable than the "bottom" starter motor has.
Most, if not all, 16v motors are "top" starter, and also I do believe the later 8v motors are also top starter.
Top starters are a whole lot easier to change than the bottom ones!
