Alarm system, no-start

My car was towed due to smog/registration issues (1989 900 TC with automatic). When I retrieved the car, it didn't start. There was a simple click. Lights came on, and they did not dim when I tried to start it.
Then, my neighbor remembered that the alarm disables the car when activated or tripped. I pressed the little button and turned on the switch, and it started right up. Ran funny around the block, but I pressed the button again for a little while and everything is back to normal. Starts like a charm everytime now.
Are other people aware of this, as opposed to buying batteries and checking their ignition and starter. My car started religiously before (145,000 miles) and only had a hitch when I had a battery drain (resolved).
People should check their alarm systems before going berserk over mechanical/electrical issues. I could've had better sleep and my money wasted on a battery over this. Tell a friend.
Or, do I not know what I'm talking about? Anyone else discover their alarm as the culprit to their no-start situation?
I'm curious.
