Seeping radiator drain plug- a cautionary tale Posted by Arabiflora [Email] (#1129) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Arabiflora) on Tue, 4 Jan 2011 22:33:43 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Proving once again that no good deed goes unpunished, I twisted-off the exterior plastic portion of the radiator drain plug at the end of a (successful!) alternator bushing repair operation. I seated it snugly, refilled the coolant system and noticed that it was dripping-- about 1 drop/second. Regrettably, I put the socket and extension wrench back to it and promptly twisted it off.
I suspect that the O-ring (of which I was entirely unawares but is noted upon search of the board) was driven into the threads in such a way as to prevent a good seal regardless of how tight the drain plug might be installed. I'll have to pay the stupid tax tomorrow and hopefully snag a replacement from the boneyard.
Things could be worse, I guess, but at present it really sucks to be me... Any guidance regarding removal of the remnant plug and especially interchangeability (year-to-year) would be welcome.
