hello, I am a new 900 owner(since late November)- a 1992 turbo hatch. I own a 2002 Saab 9-5 as well. I love both. I completed the Townsend reverse gear fix for popping out of reverse and it seems like it worked out well(except for using maybe too much loctite-got into the metal sleave-Should I redo that?). I have not driven much since(maybe 1 mile) because I also replaced the steering column boots and need an alignment;I also want to change out the trans fluid. With the side cover off I did notice some gear wear(I will post pics later)on the reverse gear idler(the one that the arm engages)and hoping it can be driven for a long time without a new tranny-it does shift fine in all other gears and no whining. The reverse definitely seems more distinct; the other gears, i dont know, I need to drive more. Anyway, I do want to replace the fluid, which has BG Synchroshift in it as stated by the previous owner. Reading here several folks have stated that the trannies do not like much change and ideally I would like to stick with BG but I have to mail order it and it is expensive. Is changing to another synthetic like amsoil, royal purple, honda mtl, or even the GM synchromesh(which apparently is highly regarded); ones that are more readily available, considered too much of a "change"?
Also, with the side cover off, I did stick my finger in the bottom of the tranny sump and seemed to notice some residue, so should I do some flush maybe with a run of regular motor oil as suggested by some here just for a short 100 mile run or is that too risky? Obviously, I will see more once I open the rear cover. I thought the previous owner(who only had it for 18 months, and was a saab parts guy at swedish car shop) seemed to take good care of it but I am beginning to wonder, because of other things that I wont get into here. Anyway, he said to change the tranny fluid in 10,000 miles. I will do it now. I am thinking he most likley knew about the tranny being worn, although it did not start the popping out of reverse until 2 months into my ownership-maybe 1500 miles, so maybe not.
Sorry for the ramble, but any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Also, can I use just the 518 permatex gasket maker to seal the cover back? That is what I did on the side cover.
thanks,
Mark
