When I came from Sweden to America 20 years ago and was faced with the first 900 water pump replacement, I did not believe it was possible to replace without first removing the A/C compressor.
I had never seen a 900 with A/C compressor before and replacing the pump on Swedish cars was dirt simple.
But after awhile when you have learned the tricks and have the right tools and learned to scrape off the old gasket using flashlight, mirror and razor blades, it is fully possible.
Since it is even as tricky to remove the compressor either by the 4 bolts and nuts or finding the lower bolt for the bracket, it is not much to gain removing it.
