After removing the chainwheels and chains you have to unscrew the fifth gear retaining nut on the front of the mainshaft, draw back the layshaft, which requires removing the inner drivers and differential, drop out the front counter gear and remove the fifth gear assembly. Then you can drive back the alignment dowels and unbolt the front case half and remove it. That's an overview, many small details omitted of course.
