The fiberglass is too rigid, and can break away. There are better solutions. The best would be to have sheet metal welded in. I've done that in the past and it is a little more work. Another option is to "glue" in new metal. I went that route on a car that had a huge hole above the catalytic converter due to a bad heat shield. That was years ago before I had a welder. I used a two part autobody epoxy made by 3m. It required a special mixing gun that a body shop lent me. The gun was really expensive, so if you can't borrow one, forget buying one.
If I couldn't borrow that special gun, I'd be tempted to use 3M 5200 marine adhesive. This stuff takes forever to cure, but it is available everywhere, and it is really strong stuff. It even comes in black.
While you have your interior out, check your catalyst's heat shield. If it isn't good replace it now. Eeuro has them for $100.
