first of all, a used Saab is not for everyone... make sure your buddy actually wants one and not a Honda...
if it's a c900 I'd highly advise a 5 speed. 9000 5 speed is better but 4 speed auto in those cars is not as big a problem as 3 speed auto in the c900. However, for a 9000 avoid ones with tcs + there are some other things you'll get if you search the 9000 bb.
with 9-3, probably 1999 is the best year if you want a low risk of sludge. T7 cars (2000+ or any viggen) are at risk of sludging and you should have it checked out before you buy... a late year NG 900 is generally considered pretty reliable (2.3L NA or 2.0T) and iirc, 1998 got some of the OG9-3 improvements (transitional year)... auto or stick doesn't matter reliabilty wise in those cars...
