Yes I just replaced my transmission with a junkyard unit. Try to find an 89 or 89 unit. Take off the differential cover, and side plates to inspect the gears and see if there is any chunks, of anything in there, and try to get one with 100,000 miles or less and you may be fine. Buy the special tool to hold the clutch compressed from eeuroparts.
Learning how to do the swap is not rocket science (disconnect all of the electric, the cooling system, the motor mounts, the exhaust, the speedometer cable, the power steering hose, and the linkage and it lifts right out of the car. About a day's work in and a day's work out. I bought an engine hoist off Cr---list for $75. It is not hard just time consuming.
Having Walter Wong's guy along at the junkyard is a real bonus - what a great service. Makes me wish I lived in LA.
