There are a couple of difference, probably the most relevant being that 85 (I think, maybe 86?) and earlier transmissions don't have the stickshift centering mechanism inside the transmission, so there is a spring mechanism that acts on the shifter rod inside the car, just ahead of the stick. You could drive it without centering, or swap the shifter mechanism....
You also would have to swap the front cover of the tranny, no big deal. Inner drivers may be different also, I can't recall when they switched... Primary drive ratios may be different between 8v and 16v turbos also, somebody else here would know, or check the numbers on the trans, you might end up with higher highway RPMs.
The 84 trans is not as strong as the one you have, the 93 has both a bigger rear pinion bearing and a different (and larger) synchro setup. But it will work :)
Of course, this is all assuming the tranny in the 84 is actually from an 84... It could be anything at this point, have to check the numbers of it, they're on a plate facing up right next to the plastic clutch cover.
What's wrong with the one you have?
