Well, the mechanic found the wire to the alternator hanging by a thread, and replaced that. I took the car on a 1,000 mile roundtrip last weekend. Ran beautifully. Then, a few days ago, I got stopped in city traffic AND THE SAME DAMN THING HAPPENED AGAIN. Engine running rough, had to accelerate to cross Ben Franklin Bridge in Philly and barely made it, pedal to floor, running only 3500 rpms or so, 35 mph, bucking and coughing. Finally got to downhill side and started running smoothly again. Running OK since.
What the hell?
Mechanic's opinion is that fuel filter and spark plug wires are fine. He didn't find a problem with vacuum lines. He's a Saab-only guy, so I guess he knows what he's talking about.
Wife threatening that one more major repair is going to force a major lifestyle choice ...
