James has a good point. I would evaluate the condition of the frame and front suspension area before giving up. When I first buy a Saab C900 I usually remove the AC stuff so the water pump is accessible along with other things. But I don't drive that much and I know that AC is nice to have sometimes when it's really warm and humid. It is funny what we do to keep these cars on the road... I recently bought an '87 SPG for ~100 bucks that was about to go to the crusher (North Dakota car -salt roads), it had all kinds of issues but after spending 3k rebuilding everything it is priceless to me. I recently drove and bought my first 88+ C900 (a 1990 rusting turbo) and was surprised how well it drove compared to my -88 cars... all in all it was just easier to drive. If the frame is good/repairable search 8719924 on ebay for your 1st through 4th syncros in your 89 gearbox, have the pinion bearings replaced, and then drive another 150k or more. I highly recommend Erikkson's rebuild for our transmissions. I shipped my tranny to them via UPS (car parts) in this surrounded by cardboard 'http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-202300294/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053'
