I was in the same position a couple of weeks ago. Had my AC hose replaced in 2000 on my 91 900 and had it filled by a professional shop with R12. Worked great for about 10 years (low 40's vent temp) and then it seemed to take longer to get there. Shortly after that it did not turn on anymore. I diagnosed it as a faulty anti-freeze switch. At the same time I checked my working pressures with a set of gauges and when I used it on one of the schrader valves on the hose, the little rubber seal on the valve stem broke (had not been used for more than 10 years) and I started to get some leakage. Before I made it to the AC shop to recover the rest and replace the stem, it was pretty much all gone.
I live near the coast in CA so AC is nice but not absolutely critical. I noticed that my AC clutch was starting to slip so did not want to make another long term R12 investment. So I had the AC shop replace the fittings and vacuum out the system. Then I put in a little more than 2 cans of Enviro Safe. Used it with good results on my 89 for more than 7 years. There are many discussions on the internet about this so you can decide if you are comfortable with that if you want. You would have to do the work since licensed shops are not allowed to use it.
Now it's working great again. My vent temp goes down to 30 degrees (guess I need to adjust my new anti-frost switch) and more importantly, it seems to be easier on the compressor. I don't feel the jolt anymore when the AC cycles on and off and no more clutch slipping.
Good luck, Harold
