the reason for the design is to keep fuel available to the main pump all the time, even in cornering.
the pickup with the screen is right at the bottom of the tank in a depression
and the idea is that it scavenges from the absolute of the tank in a straight line, and the canister will be full of fuel for the main pump to run. the two pumps run at the same rate and are wired in parallel and thereby run together at all times. each is working so don't think that having two makes for longer lasting. if the prepump is not working you will not be able to get the approximately last 4 gallons from the tank, and the canister will only fill via fuel "leaking" into it via the various places it can. you could conceivably have fuel starvation problems on extended prolonged hard turns where the fuel was sloshed to one side such that the canister didn't get "leaked into". that is the prepumps job.
sure you saved yourself a couple of hours labor too.
