the 1985 has a dipstick on the manual transmission, as well as the obvious dipstick for engine oil. I always remind my friends to check fluids once a week, just because stuff happens. Also, the drain for engine oil is usually a 13mm drain plug, relatively easy to take off with a 6 point socket. the transmission oil drain plug is significantly different AND usually requires much more force to open it. It seems that it would be very difficult to confuse those two. btw the automatic is completely different too, as well as it's ability to keep oil in the torque converter. you have a 5 speed and so any discussions about oil remaining etc don't play with your situation.
I have run a transmission out of oil via a leak in a race, I am not sure how you lasted as long as you did, of course we were beating on it but it was pretty obvious that things were not happy before the end of Saturday.
I have also had a client ruin a trans he thought that the oil drops on the ground were engine oil. when I drove it the bearing noise made me cringe, I immediately checked the oil and it was off the dip stick. The transmission was down to less than a quart of oil drained. It did take some time to do the damage and if he had checked the dipstick.... he could have avoided allot of damage.
We have all heard, and if you have not here it is for the first time, the horror stories of the Corvette that had the oil drain plug not put in tightly and the oil leaked out and seized the engine... and and and... never heard it first hand from anyone so it may be urban myth... but I always check my fluids after having anyone else work on a car I drive. It's not that I don't trust them... but I don't. so for all the lurkers out there.... check your fluids!
