I feel your pain, it was almost 100 here a few days ago. The 89 has a sanyo compressor and IMO, it's just junk. They generally degrade at the shaft seal. I've heard others recommend running it periodically in the winter to try to prevent trouble. I replaced mine but then the car was demolished in a crash. The other pain is that you'll have to convert the system to R134. That requires flushing everything out because the oil from the old refridgerent is not compatible with the R134 oil. Also, you are supposed to replace the rubber hoses. I suppose if you got a good flush you MIGHT be able to avoid that. Rebuilt compressors are expensive. Good luck...
