Wild guess here as you present 2 issues, but I don't have enough info. Car running hot (with A/c on and off?) is the a/c fan coming on each time you turn on A/C even if car is not running. The right hand fan should come on when you reach operating temp, but the left fan should come on as soon as you turn on a/c.If both they don't that could be heating issue. Also when you turn on A/C it effects the flapper valve for fresh air. Possibly a vacumn leak could cause the idle change when a/c is off, but the vac air may get rerouted to where there is no leak or pull in the cut/tear/ open hose when selector valve is changed or a/c is on /off. Just a WAG here.
