1990 manual transmission dipstick missing?

I wanted to check the transmission oil on my 90 SPG. There's no dipstick where they typically are (under the exhaust manifold). I checked the owner's manual, and it shows the dipstick where I thought it should be.
Where it should be, I do see a bolt or plug of some kind on the transmission. I just want to make sure the oil isn't low.
Is this normal for 1990?
And would it be possible to take a dipstick assembly off another 900 and put it on this car, assuming it should have one?
