Hi folks,
This is on a '92 900T convertible...
So I've been dealing with a low level power steering leak until it finally gave out this last weekend. I've been rooting around trying to figure out whether it's the pump, rack, or a hose/fitting connection.
I had the front wheels up on blocks and went so far as loosening up the upper bracket nut, bracket bolt, and adjusting screw.
Not being able to tell myself where the leak was, I took the car to a nearby shop to have them tell me if they could identify the problem. Apparently it's just a leak at the outlet fitting to the pump, and I decided to take it home to see if I could manage the repair myself.
When I picked the car up, my shifter was awfully soft, as if the gearshift linkage was failing.
I took it home, and began to dig into the PS pump again loosening the upper nut, bolt and screw. Not being able to get a good shot at the lower mounting bolt of the PS pump, I gave up, but intentionally left the PS belt loose so as not to stress the PS system, and inadvertently left the upper bracket hardware loose.
Well, between my house, and dinner, I lost reverse completely, and then even the lower gears, and can only engage higher gears just enough to stress my clutch. (It's now towed back to my house.)
So, is there any way the shifter problem and the power steering problems are even remotely related? I hadn't loosened anything other than the upper pump bracket hardware. I did fiddle with the rubber gearshift linkage, but hadn't loosened or otherwise done anything to the shift linkage.
I don't know if I should be suspicious of the garage I had look at the PS system for me, but I have a hard time believing the shifter just happened to fail as a result of anything I did.
Anyway, just fishing for ideas. I'll try to diagnose the gear shifter tomorrow, but if anyone has some helpful experience / advice, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks,
Jeff
