IAny year interchanges.... A later box has bigger synchros-supposedly smoother shifting. Since all the boxes are old, buying a later model box is no guarantee. The most important issue is the pinion/differential gears. The best preventative work you can do is purchase the used tranny in person, after removing the rear cover-and inspecting the differential and opinion- while turning both drivers simultaneously. As for whining, there is really no guarantee. The best thing, if you want to eliminate the chance is to have the box professionally rebuilt. In my opinion, 900.00, is a bit steep- especially if one has to pay for the swap. Maybe, you can take apart your existing box, or at least check the pinion/differential gears-and have yours rebuilt. Lastly, when you do your inspection, take the side cover off, and spin the gears to check for any broken clues. Recently, I paid 320.00 for a good 1988 box, after confirming beauty in the diff/pinion area, as well as selecting gears, and testing how much effort to shift out, or in.
