Just to reiterate, I'm no chemist & don't claim to know more the average mechanically inclined back yard wrench. I'm simply trying to think outside the box. In my particular case, the clutch slave leaked so badly the proper fluid wasn't an option (even if I had some left). I needed to use the car & ended up with a quick fix that worked. So, lets agree that brake fluid is the optimal medium...under optimal conditions. Under less than optimal conditions however....what are possible substitutes & among the possibilities, which are the better ones? I had success using hydraulic fluid (i think). What about anti freeze? It's glycol based & won't promote rust. If you're stuck out on the road someplace w/no clutch or brakes...why not make use some of that antifreeze bouncing around the trunk?
