I have both an '85 and '89 SPG.
'85 engine has unique block, head, and exhaust cam. It's a little weird. The block is actually the same as the '82.5-'84 8-valve turbos. The combustion chambers in the '85 head are smaller than the the rest of the 16-valve turbo heads, and the pistons are shorter, resulting in a different configuration achieving the same compression ratio as the rest of the 16-valve turbo motors.
The distributor uses one-year rotor--he can and probably should use his '89 distributor as it'll have a different hall-effect sensor.
He'll need to use his thermostat housing as it will have the bigger bracket for the LH2.4 IAC on his '89.
The '85 intake manifold has no provision for the water cooling supply line to the water-jacketed turbocharger used in '88/up models. He'd have to either drill and tap the '85 manifold or use his '89 manifold.
Throttle position sensor and NTC (engine temperature sensor with blue plug between #2 and #3) are the same.
The '89 injectors should ideally be used as they match the '89 LH2.4 ECU.
He'll need to swap the engine mount brackets on both the driver and passenger side as '85 uses solid mounts and '89 uses hydraulic.
If he's taking your '85 gearbox as well, he'll either need the whole solid mount assembly on the front cover and everything including bolts to attach it to the body, or he'll need to change the front cover to one with the correct hydraulic mount provisions.
I think that covers everything...
Bests,
