How to do this. Posted by Notnoel [Email] (#23) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Notnoel) on Thu, 6 Oct 2011 10:20:14 In Reply to: Replacing steering column -- splined shaft won't go on, Bri, Thu, 6 Oct 2011 07:35:28 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
It is not hard, just requires knowing a trick. I assume here that the splines do actually match and the problem is more one of applying the proper leverage. I had the same difficulty doing mine, so I think I know where you are at.
What you need to do first is to get them lined up just a little (which is where you are at now.
From the engine compartment, carefully set the end of a 2-foot long, 1/2 inch diameter wooden dowel or a steel rod (a cheap floor jack handle works pretty well) between the "arms" of the u-joint just above the splined shaft; you should be able to get it to catch. Get a helper to gently hold onto the U-joint through the firewall - they just have to keep it steady. You can do this without a helper if you or lucky.
Then gently tap on the upper end of the dowel or steel rod. This will deliver the force straight down on the splined shaft, and voila, you should be done.
