the electrical design there is poor. It's basically a card edge connector. The "card" (male part) needs to make several connections to the other side of the socket + once there's some corrosion (usually in the ground) things go funky... and once the connection is bad, you get burning + more corrosion - can be a mess!
The conventional "solution" is as thresholdmusic described... but fwiw, I have a car with that solution already done, that later had a different (non-ground) pin cause a similar problem... cleaning the connection has worked so far + if it becomes problematic again, I'm soldering directly + skipping the connector completely...
go ahead + add the ground, but I just wanted to point this out, in case it comes up again!
