You will need to buy a new boot, and also a pouch of CV grease. Try Eeuroparts, site sponsor, or try the local Saab dealer for a better quality boot.

You'll need to pull the axle I think to get properly at it, though just possibly you can pull it out of the cup now and do it with the other end still bolted into the hub.

What you'll be doing is, wipe away all the old grease off the tripod and out of the remains of the boot. You can leave what's in the inner driver. Make sure not to let the rollers come off the tripod ends, with all the needle roller bearings inside them.

Then you remove the snap ring on inner end of the axle and somehow get the tripod off the axle. Then pop the metal clamping ring off the remains of the boot and pull that off the axle, slide new boot on, clamp that, reinstall tripod and circlip, and reinstall it into the driver with grease squirted in just beforehand, then install new inner clamp.

The hard part will be getting the tripod off the axle with the axle still in the car.

Instead you may need to actually pull the entire axle, first reinstalling it with torn boot to firm things up so you can do the unbolting needed:

Slide the tripod back into the inner driver despite the torn boot, and put your new ball joint on. Then you need to remove the big axle nut, 1 1/4" socket and breaker.

Do you have the Bentley manual? Usual way to do this is I think to unbolt the upper ball joint and pull it out of the A-arm, then I think axle will pull out of driver and out of hub afterwards. Then take it to a bench, maybe an old-fashioned arbor press, and after removing circlip, shaft can be driven or pressed out of tripod.

Or you can reassemble it as is, by kind of wiggling and twisting things till it's lined up to fit into the driver, and then promptly drive the car to a garage to do the boot.

Rebuilt axles, of lesser quality and longevity than Saab, are available, but yours probably has nothing wrong with it and is, even well used, likely to have a longer life left in it than a rebuilt axle.

Don't drive the car for long with that torn boot or you'll need a new axle.
