on some level, for what it is, the Clarion is really not that bad... but it is just a cassette deck + radio, and times have marched on.
I would also say the same is true for the speakers. They are not great, but I've heard worse... the combination is "forgiving"... rolled off at both ends, but still listenable... I'd rather that than a hyped modern system.
fwiw, I'm fairly into audio + hifi... into stuff like Linn + Naim, build audio gear, own high resolution recordings, etc... never really bothered with car audio though...
I'm still toying with the idea of upgrading ours... Zig has kind of put that in my mind again... I have yet to see a head unit that really appeals though (of course, to each, their own)... some of the Nakamichi units look ok (both aesthetics + likely audio quality)... others here who have used them seem happy with them... there were some other good recommendations also... but I'll probably sit on the fence a bit longer... would be so cool if Naim made a Nait/NAT/CD combo for the car... that would be the perfect match for a Saab imho! even green! not likely though... might be an interesting diy audio project... minimalist head unit... I'm thinking aloud... (probably a waste of time, or at least, that was seemingly Julian Vereker's opinion, and he was a car enthusiast! "listen to the engine" or something like that...)
