Merry Christmas All,

I've been trying to get my old 92' turbo back on the road remotely for a number of years and have relied on this board for help. I live in New York and my parents are in PA (where the car is). I don't need the car at the moment, but I can't bear to part with it (obviously). We fixed the clutch hydraulics and a few other things last year and it's been sitting for months at a local mechanic's who's promised to inspect it and sort things out so that we can at long last tag it (my stepdad's going to drive it).

When the mechanic tried to get it in the bay, finally, the key wouldn't turn. I had a go at it myself last week and didn't have any luck. But after checking here I'd planned to return after Christmas and take apart the console to get at the lock. In the intervening days, upon returning to New York for a meeting, I had an accident with a full tea kettle that's temporarily made travel impossible, and I can't get to car (or to my family/Christmas dinner/etc.).

A friend of mine mentioned my plight to a buddy of his who's a Saab lover, and who lives a few towns away from my parents. He fears for my lock, and for my reverse lock-out, and has just offered to stop by the garage, even without me there, and try to sort things out for me.

And he's also helping another guy he knows to get an old SPG that was traded to a dealer he knows back on the road because it's just too beautiful a car to scrap.

I suppose he's something of a Saab missionary. Not sure if he's on this board or not, but in light of all the press lately characterizing Saab owners as eccentric English professors and such, I vote for a collective re-imagining of us, quite simply, as nice people who appreciate beautiful design . . . whether it's a commodity in today's world or not.

I'm crossing my fingers that Saab survives somehow despite the bad news of last week. In the meantime, though, I'm grateful that there are people out there committed to Saabs surviving simply because they appreciate great aesthetics and engineering.
