engine swap, backwards from normal

A friend of mine brought his '88 turbo convertible to my place to have me do a transmission swap. He bought the car cheaply with a bad tranny. As far as I know, the car has not been driven for 8 years. When I raised the hood for the first time to see exactly what I had in front of me I was rather surprised to see a N/A engine sitting there.
I have no clue, nor does my friend, on if this was a running set up at one time. Someone obviously took the time and energy to do this so hopefully they knew what they were doing. From the tag on the transmission, it does appear to be an 87 or 88. The ECU is the original for the turbo. The distributor is also from the turbo. It appears some wiring changes have been made under the hood.
What things should I be looking for and what should have been done to make the N/A engine work in the turbo car?
