I too lever the alt. away against the coolant hoses as far as possible and block it there with wood block. Then a one piece 6 point socket/universal & long 3/8 extention. The angle is bad, but choose the right universal orientation for the first 1/8 turn to break loose. If I remember correctly, I've also used a crowsfoot directly on a ratchet.
Also, I believe the hole in the bracket is slotted to the edge so that the blot only needs to be loosened to lift the bracket.
It's been awhile since I've done one, hope the memory is still good.
