Hard to shift when going uphill

'90 SPG 250k. Solid engine and trans. We have a ski area nearby with parking at the top of the mountain. All 3 times that we have gone up this year (snow has not arrived in Utah yet), I try to keep in 3rd the whole way. I get half way up and go to shift to 2nd and it will not engage. It's as if 2nd is gone. I can slow down and hit first, then second, but downshifting to 2nd doesnt work. The other night, I tried 4th and 5th while I was at it to see if they were even there. Couldnt get into those either. Only first when I've been going uphill steeply. Any ideas? Shifting in general is a little sloppy - could use a new linkage. Not sure if tranny has anything to do with it.
