Jeez, Bill, I read your comments and cringed. Nothing against you and you've offered a lot of good advice but I don't like this one.

Torn boots are what kills calipers in rust country. That is the barrier that keeps water from seeping down into the bore and sitting there corroding the bore and also depositing rust onto the chromed piston, eventually eating through the chrome and pitting that too.

You CAN grab onto the piston itself out past the rubber boots with pliers, even bite through its chromed surface into the iron, but it's touchy whether you'll slip and chew up a boot. And chewing thru the chrome means another route for rust, down into the groove where the boot is seated and then down inside the boot.

Very old very rusted calipers with intact boots can still function fine. Try not to treat the boots with disdain; if they're torn the caliper can still function fine for maybe as long as you'll own the car but there's no guarantee.
