$ 2k doesn't buy you a whole lot of body & paint work in the greater NY area. Last year, someone hit my 9-5 on the driver door. Only damage was to the door exterior. The insurance bill for finding a new door, taking it apart, painting it, putting it back together and on the car, and blending the non-metallic paint (I cannot tell it's been painted from the outside...) was just over $2,000... Granted, on a "private deal" it may have been less, but if you really want it done right, you'll either have to pay well, or do it yourself.
If you have the time and inclination, you could look up your local vo-tech schools and see if they offer a nighttime auto body class. I did that for a year or so with a 99. There was very little "class" involved. It was mostly really cheap (total was well under $200 per semester) shop time (about 3 hours a night, twice a week) with all the tools you need, and the cheap "lab fee" covered all the sanding/grinding discs and filler you can use. The only big payout came when it was time to paint the car. I did the 99 in a DuPont solid brown, the original color, and the paint & supplies were $500 alone... Where I went, the instructor shot the car if you didn't know how (and at $500 for paint, you want it done right!).
