Simon,
if you add two ports onto exhaust pipe - one before the cat and one after - and run differential pressure gauge to these ports then you'd measure smth about 0.05 bar of differential pressure with a good TWC at full engine power (specified value goes off the top of my head, need to search for my notes to be more precise). If differential pressure measured is more than that, then TWC is clogged and should be replaced or the exhaust system design should be reviewed.
That backpressure is about the same as one created with cambered (i.e.: non-freeflow) muffler.
I may need to refer to Basic Engine factory manual for saab dyno graphs for different engines, but there're two problems:
- I'm here and there manual is over there (500 miles to the east-east-south)
- as I recall it there were different graphs on the same engine with the same emissions level but for different model years - and they were different!
As I explain it for myself - Saab used to be pretty flexible and client-focused and sometimes reduced power specs (e.g. for some engine variants for some markets) so that clients could save on taxes and/or insurance. As I recall it there were some taxes/insurance bonuses for greener variants when TWC's were introduced and started their way to mass-production.
