Front upper shock jam nuts Posted by Landjet [Email] (#16) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Landjet) on Mon, 20 Feb 2012 21:48:18 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I have two cars in the shop -- 89 no ABS and 92 yes ABS....I've tried adapting the Lisle 20400 shock absorber tool and it is not stout enough to keep the pin from rotating. Well, the pin deformed when applying torque, but the double D recess in the tool deformed as well.
The jam nuts are so thin that normal wrenches won't combine to unjam the jam nut. Soaked in PB twice, and they just won't budge.
Thought about using a 16mm cone spanner from a bike shop to hold the bottom jam nut, but haven't found one yet.
ABS vs non ABS for the driver side would require a different tool as well. The non ABS has almost a clear shot looking down. The ABS makes it tough to get a tool down on top of the nuts.
So, am I remembering this correctly that you have to take off the bottom of the shock, and bend the shock strut over so when you try to spin the jam nuts off, they won't just spin the piston inside the head? Then the jam nuts can come loose?
When I go back together with this, I'll put thicker jam nuts on so normal wrenches can unjam the jam......why this has to be such a struggle I don't know, but mother nature put the glue into the jam this time....
