I'm beginning to think that it is indeed the tach. I went after the coil and iggy amp, and neither changed the tach inop or the faint black smoke. New plugs, dizzy cap, and rotor. Cleaned contacts that I could find under the hood. Swapped in a newer O2 sensor. Nothing changed the faint black smoke. It is running better with the timing set back from 35 degrees to 18 and the existing plugs were gapped out at about .050.
So, it does run better no doubt.
I'll check fuel pressure at the rail, as I suppose it could be a failed FPR but it hold vacuum and no gas detected in the vacuum line......
ECU --- should I swap in a Bosch 948 ECU or won't that work in a 1989 LH2.4?
