Mike,
you'd start with drain current check (search this BB for many posts on this) - if it's more then 5mA then trace all the circuits and eliminate that bad boy sucking your batt dry.
The next step is to check the charging current when engine is idling and when it goes for higher RPM (put your amperemeter in series from alternator output to that big thick red wire which originally hooks onto that alt output): if it doesn't charge at all then check ground wire on the alternator, then check VR (voltage regulator); if it gives no charge at low RPM only (but there's some charge at higher RPM) then check the rectifier, rotor and brushes (if you never heard about these bits, then better take your alternator to a specialized shop).
Good luck,
Zig
