Maybe things don't go so differently here in the West. First, the law can concoct about any "reasonable suspicion" they see fit in order to search your car. Or, if they ask to search your car with no reasonable suspicion and you say "no", they will detain you for as long as it takes to get a drug sniffing dog on site that will sniff the outside of your car and if the pup shows any interest (in the eyes of the officer) then your car will be searched. Here in MN they used to have sobriety checkpoints where cars were stopped and the drivers checked out. That has been overturned by the courts as unconstitutional. And of course there is the airport TSA with their porno scanning machines...but that's another story. I'm probably painting a worst case scenario picture here, but nevertheless, the end result is the same.
