saab paint is better than aftermarket... Posted by Snowmobile [Email] (#686) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Snowmobile) on Wed, 4 Apr 2012 06:25:34 In Reply to: I know, right? Pic looks so good! I kind of agree with NickNick here... I don't know about Maaco, but we had some minor body work done by the local Saab dealer, and the paint is just awful... The bloody clearcoat started peeling a few years after it was done + now I'd like to do a repaint. Also, we live in the salt belt + oil spray our car annually. The parts that are original paint are mostly flawless... but the door panel that they painted is terrible - rust is bubbling up through the paint - it's like the paint is porous to moisture! Because it is oil sprayed, all the insides of the doors are covered in a thin film of oil + will not rust from the inside!
Saab paint is really really good (or at least was in this era - check the saab 900 "engineering features" book for a description of the process, lots of dipping entire cars + baking). I would never strip it off to put on cheap paint. Not such a problem to coat overtop the old (since the tenacious Saab epoxy primer remains intact)... But what do you do once you have a peeling clearcoat on there? sand off just the clear? how do you control sanding thickness that well?
Has anyone ever powdercoated a c900? I know (indirectly) a guy who does it. I got a bike done + that is some amazing paint. I bet it would cost a mint for a whole car (and it is a hell of a lot easier to get a bike 100% paint + rust free than a car!)...
